The Roots & Shoots club has engaged in many projects to improve our surrounding community.
2017-2018
Roots & Shoots ran a bottle drive to raise money for OneTreePlanted, where they use the money donated to plant trees in areas suffering from deforestation. In total, we raised enough money to plant fifty trees. We also baked homemade dog treats and made dog and cat toys to donate to the New Rochelle Humane Society.
2018-2019
We created a bulletin board to advertise our club around the school and spread awareness of the importance of Native Plants and recognizing Earth Day. We also had multiple members attend the Westchester Community College Native Plant Sale, volunteering their time to support native plants in New York.
2019-2020
We began the compost initiative at the Blind Brook middle & high schools. Additionally, we hosted a candy-gram fundraiser, organized various COVID relief efforts, including a mask drive, and created an anti-racist reading list!
2020-2021
We partnered with the Town of Rye's Sustainability Committee to create the Crawford Park Native Bird Treasure Hunt, a Crawford Park treasure hunt, which encourages citizens to think about sustainability and get involved in their community (official event page: https://www.townofryeny.com/requirement/crawford-park-native-bird-treasure-hunt). We also began our long-term Harkness Park project, which aims to completely renovate a park right next to Blind Brook and remove the various invasive plants in it.
2021-2022
We continued to free Harkness Park from invasive plants, and we plan to decorate the park's native plant garden with sculptures made from recyclable materials. We also increased our social media presence to bring more awareness to different issues that Roots and Shoots tackles. Finally, we helped in Hurricane Ida relief events and, after a long hiatus, have brought the composting initiative back to life!
